GHOSTware - LEAN SIX SIGMA

Many quality "professionals" believe in ghosts. They see ghosts everywhere. GHOSTware are things that quality "professionals" believe in and think they see, but really don't exist.

OEE

OEE is GHOSTware created by multiplying 3 unrelated numbers and hoping it means something. Dr Wheeler, the world's leading process statistician, uses the analogy: "OEE is like using our weight times our height times our systolic blood pressure, as a measure of how good looking we are." So if your blood pressure goes down and you grow up, you'll still be attractive to phasmophiliacs.

OEE also uses an antiquated 1870 definition of quality defined as good vs bad. Modern quality is defined as "On target with minimum variance". Use control charts for relevant variables, instead of the OEE GHOSTware.

OEE doesn't exist as a real, useful, quantity. It is GHOSTware.

SIX SIGMA'S 1.5 SIGMA "SHIFT"

The 1.5 sigma shift started with Mr Bill Smith's tampering of his casting process. Tampering caused the mean of his process to shift "as much as 1.5 sigma", making his process wildly out of control. Smith claimed he could improve quality by widening the specification limits. Widening specification limits to make things better, is GHOSTware.

Mr Smith's buddy, self-confessed con man Harry, then "proved" all processes were wildly out of control, just like Bill's. He laughably based his GHOSTware "proof" on the height of a stack of discs! Even more laughably, none of his victims investigated his poltergeist.

Harry scammed millions of dollars, while sending his gullible victims down the drain. Ford for example, showed an average of 1 in 5 parts defective AFTER improvement for "successful" Six Sigma projects.

Any process may shift by any amount, without limit. It is essential to understand and use control charts correctly, to ensure processes are predictable.

NORMAL DISTRIBUTIONS

Six Sigma is packed with apparitions such as the normal distribution. Professor Deming once retorted "Normal distribution? I've never seen one!" A belief in the need for normal distributions has helped Six Sigma Spiritualists hawk millions of dollars of unnecessary statistical software.

We never know the data distribution for a changing process. We don't need to! Dr Shewhart's brilliant control charts work for any process, without normalization. Dr Wheeler proved his assertion by testing 1143 different distributions.

FORGET normal distribution GHOSTware.

"SHORT TERM", "LONG TERM" Capability

The creator of the Six Sigma Scam, Harry, GHOSTED his 1.5 sigma shift every 50 measurements. Later, he made his GHOSTware even more diaphanous, claiming a 1.5 sigma shift every 6 measurements. He called this "long term". His "short term" was "instantaneous". This nonsense is pure GHOSTware.

Absolutely reeking with ectoplasm, Harry claimed:
"Short term capability = Long term capability + 1.5 sigma shift"

Sack your Black Belts! Call the GHOSTbusters!
